The Detail: The Handmade Surface

There is something immediately different about a surface that carries evidence of how it was made. A glaze that pools more heavily around the foot of a bowl. The slight variation in a woven fibre. Grain left visible beneath a dark stain. Tiny marks in hammered metal that stop the surface becoming completely uniform. These imperfections are not really imperfections at all. They are reminders that an object has passed through somebody’s hands.

This was central to the Arts & Crafts response to industrial production: not simply that objects should be handmade, but that their materials and construction should be allowed to remain visible. Wood should look like wood. Clay should retain something of clay. Metal need not be polished until every trace of the process disappears.

In a contemporary room, these surfaces are useful for another reason too. They break up the smoothness of mass-produced furniture and make a space feel gradually collected rather than installed all at once. A room doesn’t need to be full of handmade objects to achieve this. Often, just a few tactile surfaces are enough.
